Trees work well here, alive but unconscious, self-selected barriers, what gets in the way of sunlight. The dialogue on the way to North Hollywood is deft in showing how easy it is for people to not meet each other when talking. Edward's eulogy is engaging, and it was oddly rewarding to learn after the fact that he doesn't say it, only knows it himself for the first time. When we learn, not that the brothers had different dreams, were different people, John a poet, Edward an 8-year-old capitalist, but that  Edward couldn't get the light he needed, couldn't be seen, there's an experience for the reader of trees suddenly out of the way. It also scans that the brother who got all the sunlight would be aware that he was getting shade from Edward ("Do you love me?"). I appreciate that without being likeable Edward is human.

Wow, what a nice comment. Thank you, Peter. When you say it, I see it, about the trees. It wasn't conscious on my part at the time, just worked out that way. And then the title followed.

Really appreciate your dive into it, gives me a new perspective. Thanks again.

A lyrical slice of family life. Family is complicated, and their impact on our psychology profound. This story captures that complication and impact beautifully and economically. I enjoyed this story a lot - I savored it over 2 (rather than my usual 1) cups of coffee. Well done, Victor, as always.

Thanks Mike, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments. Yes indeed, complicated, alright. There's a couple people out there in the world that I wish would see this, but I guess that would mean I'd have to go out of my way to bring it to their attention, ha, :) Hope you enjoyed your coffee. I'm on my 2nd, yum....

Beautifully done Victor. Complicated feelings explored, a satisfying resolution after a near disaster of a eulogy not delivered.

Thanks Jim. Glad you liked it, friend. And yes, thankfully Edward remembered to hold his tongue this time.
